Daniel McBrearty is a busy musician, living in Antwerp, Belgium. Over the last 30 years, his musical journey, which began with classic American jazz, has passed through explorations of funk and soul, celtic folk, meditational Indian music, and back full circle - to swing.
Born in Wales in 1964, Daniel moved to Antwerp in 2001 after spending 20 or so years in and around London. While in London (1990 to 1999) he was active on the jazz and funk scene there, and cut his teeth as a writer and producer. Starting a family in 2000, he moved to Antwerp, Belgium in 2001, and was slowly drawn back to his jazz roots through contact with local musicians such as Paolo Radoni. In 2010, now with 30 years of experience, Daniel became a full time musician.
He is a largely self-taught, apart from private lessons with a few selected teachers, and has honed his skills by playing in many groups over the years. Now, his main interests are playing jazz saxophone and clarinet, his style heavy on blues, swing and bebop, and composing and arranging.
He sometimes teaches songwriting and ensemble playing at Jazz Studio, Antwerp.
